AIDS Foundation
Counselling at AIDS Foundation
This foundation’s objectives are to reach out to individuals and communities on issues about communicable diseases, especially HIV/AIDS, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) and Tuberculosis (TB). They educate women on Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT), empower People Living with HIV (PLHIV) and improve their self-sufficiency.
The foundation requires social workers as counsellors at their Clinic in Accra. As a volunteer social worker in this capacity, you will be required to counsel and offer advice to patients of various ages who frequent the clinic.
You will also be required to help these patients to explore feelings about their lives, reflect on what is happening to them and consider ways to confidently face the future. Keeping individual confidentiality in mind, counsellors will be required to listen attentively to patients’ frustrations and concerns and offer them the time, empathy and respect they need to express their feelings.
Aside these, your duties will also include:
- establishing a relationship of trust and respect with patients at the clinic;
- encouraging patients to talk about issues they feel they cannot normally share with others;
- helping patients towards a deeper understanding of their concerns;
- assisting patients to make informed decisions and choices about their future;
- etc.
